Why We Exist
Vision Statement
To see Black women everywhere transform intergenerational trauma into purpose, resilience, and joy - reclaiming their wellness, voice, and power.
Mission Statement
The Makings of You Foundation provides holistic, culturally grounded support to help Black women heal from intergenerational trauma and overcome barriers to wellness. Through healing circles, education, and resilience-building programs, we walk alongside women as they transform pain into purpose.
Our Brand Essence
TMOY is a healing-centered nonprofit rooted in lived experience, cultural wisdom, and social justice. We hold sacred space for Black women to tell their truths, disrupt inherited patterns, and build lives filled with joy, purpose and wholeness.
We serve both high-achieving women who feel misaligned from their purpose, and women in recovery or transition seeking culturally affirming pathways to wellness. Our programs are accessible through sliding-scale and sponsored options, ensuring that healing is not a privilege, but a right.
Together, we are transforming pain into power-one story, one circle, one woman at a time.

We Carry It
“We carry it
like hush tones
like folded doilies in Big Mama’s china cabinet
like unopened letters tied with satin string
like birthmarks in the same place
three generations deep
We carry it
in our thighs thick from running
in our eyes always scanning for danger
in our tongues quick with prayer and
sarcasm, because either will save you
depending on the hour
We carry it
in our hair — coils, kinks, pressed bone straight
trying to lay down what refuses to be tamed
trying to quiet the wild
because somewhere
Somebody told us it was better that way
We carry it
in our shoulders
tense from lifting up everybody else’s burdens
even when ours is cracking us open
like pecans on Sunday porch steps
but girl
don’t you know
you are not just the keeper of scars?
you are also the keeper of songs
the reason your grandmother’s laugh
still echoes in empty rooms
you got her rhythm in your hips
her soft hush in your lullabies
her silent tears turned into loud hallelujahs
you are her revolution
you are her sweet tea on the hottest day
so love on yourself
even when the past reaches for you
wrap your arms around your tender places
teach your amygdala to dance slow
to breathe easy
to bloom
because baby
you are not the trauma you inherited
you are the healing
the promise kept
the dandelion breaking through concrete
still standing
still golden
still here”
At The Makings of You Foundation, we believe that every Black woman carries a story —
Woven from personal experiences, ancestral resilience, and the deep longing for transformation, purpose, joy, and love. Our work was born from a simple, powerful truth: healing is possible. Even for those of us who have learned to survive with wounds unspoken, with hearts armored by necessity. Our logo — a Black woman with a dandelion growing from her mind — tells this story.
The dandelion, so often dismissed as a weed, grows where nothing else dares to. Through concrete, through hostile places, through attempts to cut it down. Yet it returns, again and again. Because it is resilient. Because it is medicine. Placed right at the amygdala — the part of the brain that holds our fight, flight, or freeze response — the dandelion in our logo is a reminder: this is where trauma lives, where old alarms still sound, long after the threat is gone. Through culturally-rooted mindfulness, therapy, and spiritual practice, we help calm this ancient part of the brain. We teach the body it is safe now — safe enough to grow, to reclaim joy, to love without fear. Here, your experiences are honored. Your resilience is celebrated. Your transformation is nurtured. So you can discover your purpose, and ultimately, find joy and love — even in tender places that still ache.
This is the journey we’re on together!

FAQs
-
No one is required to share anything they are not comfortable with. While group sharing can foster connection, you are always welcome to simply listen, reflect, and participate in the way that feels safest for you.
-
Life happens. If you miss a week, you can use the workbook prompts and any provided resources to catch up at your own pace. Each session builds on the last, but you can still benefit even if you miss one.
-
While the workshop uses therapeutic tools and is led by a licensed therapist, it is not the same as individual therapy. This program is an educational and healing space designed to complement — not replace — personal counseling.
-
Come as you are. Bring your workbook, a pen, and an open heart. You may also want to have water, a comfortable space for reflection, and any items that help you feel grounded, such as a journal, blanket, or calming tea.
